MSU UOE Accessibility Training Survey

In the summer of 2017 and 2018, MSU UARC conducted an Accessibility Training survey with the personnel of University Outreach and Engagement, a major administrative unit of Michigan State University. The goal of this survey was to understand the state of accessibility awareness, knowledge, and training completed across the personnel of UOE.

The results of this survey were analyzed by role (faculty, staff, or interns) and across overall respondents to understand how training needs may vary across different roles and determine considerations for planning for accessibility training. The survey included questions asking participants about:

  • the types of documents or content they typically create as part of their job,
  • their level of expertise with different types of technology (question from MSU Internet and Technology User Experience Survey),
  • their confidence levels for creating accessible documents,
  • accessibility training they had completed,
  • and what is required by MSU's web accessibility policy.

For the full question list, see the survey text documents below. The questions were developed at MSU UARC with the assistance of John Schweitzer from MSU Center for Community and Economic Development. Any research, publications, presentations, or other work based on the questionnaire should cite it as follows:

In the summer of 2018, the questionnaire was revised before the survey was conducted again. Any research, publications, presentations, or other work based on the questionnaire should cite it as follows:

This questionnaire may be used in part or in its entirety by other units at MSU and by other universities, organizations, and entities. The authors appreciate being notified when questions from this survey are used (though doing so is not required), and feedback and suggestions are encouraged.

A portion of the findings from the 2017 survey study were presented at the 2018 CSUN Assistive Technology Conference:
