Valuing Web Usability & Accessibility: A Colloquium on Standards, Tools, and Testing
Michigan State University's Usability/Accessibility Research and Consulting (UARC) hosted Michigan's 7th annual World Usability Day event on November 10, 2011, at the Michigan State University Union in East Lansing. The theme was Making Social Media Work for You, and the event focused on the usability of social media and social networking, and the role they play in website and product development. Over 250 people attended, and many more were reached via Twitter and other social media.
Twitter Back Channel
Thanks to Twitter's back channel, nearly 850 tweets were sent in the 8 hours of the event, averaging almost one tweet every 30 seconds! This active participation by the attendees was nearly double the 477 tweets sent during last year's event. More importantly, this year's messages - sent by one-third of the MiWUD attendees - helped reach 90,598 people through more than 1.6 million impressions!
As the theme of this year's MiWUD was Social Media, our closing speaker and workshop presenter @DrCoursaris polled the audience for their current means of evaluating the success of their respective social media efforts. There were two sets of answers consisting of both monitoring tools and measurement metrics. For monitoring, attendees reported using Google Analytics, Hootsuite/Wordpress stats, Insights, Hubspot, and Radian6/Twilerts; for measurement, they cited using audience size, engagement, interactions, retweets, and sales. World Usability Day
World Usability Day is the largest gathering of industry professionals, world-class academics, government leaders, and students facilitating the progression of usability, user experience, and user-centered design. In 2010, the World Usability Day community held over 150 events in more than 40 countries. During the last five years, over 1,500 conference participants from all parts of North America representing industry, government, and academia have attended the annual event at Michigan State University.
World Usability Day was founded to explore ways to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use.
